Medical Coding Specialist

The Medical Coding Specialist has a solid working understanding of medical codes and modifiers. The Medical Coding Specialist will review the claim, determine proper translation into codes that are required by insurance payers, and work with a low error ratio to bring in cash flow and payments. Medical Coding Specialist is responsible to make sure the correct and appropriate diagnostic codes are used on every single claim to ensure the insurance companies are billed properly. The Medical Coding Specialist will be able to articulate the type of claims step by step.  The Medical Coding Specialist serves as key member of the revenue cycle team and subject matter expert on claims

Medical Coding Specialist Job duties

  • Performs retrospective and concurrent audits to ensure coding accuracy and proper reporting
  • Performs daily focused coding pre-bill reviews using coding compliance software.
  • Identifies documentation discrepancies in support of services billed including ICD 10, CPT, and Modifiers
  • Monitors, tracks, and records the daily productivity of the staff members.
  • Proactively addresses any obstacles to timely completion of claims
  • Know and understand how to troubleshoot and problem solve billing-related issues.
  • Utilizes data to develop monthly productivity metrics to track employee productivity and improve department efficiencies
  • Provides technical expertise and support to meet company goals and objectives
  • Oversee corrective action when appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned by the Billing Manager

Medical Coding Specialist must possess the following qualifications                  

Medical Coding Specialist Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Bachelor’s Degree desired
  • Five years of or Medical Billing and Coding experience
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to type a minimum of 45 wpm
  • Must have thorough ICD 10/CPT/HCPCS experience
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and highly detailed
